207 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SCIENCES, PHARMACEUTICALS AND BIOTECHNOLOGY Dr. Martin earned a PhD in biochemistry from Wayne State University and continued his postdoctoral studies for three years at Michigan State University until 1981. As he progressed further into his career, he completed two years of pharmacy studies at Ferris State College. Most recently, Dr. Martin excelled as a crystallographer and a research scientist at Wayne State University from 1999 until his retirement in 2018. Maintaining affiliation with the American Crystallographic Association, he is especially proud of his research in determining the structure of thrombin, which had not been completed previously in the course of any academic study. Likewise, he is humbled by the attention received from a paper he prepared at Wayne State University on molecular dynamics and quantum mechanics, written in collaboration with a renowned quantum mechanic from the Department of Chemistry at Wayne State University. He has further contributed to over 60 refereed publications over the course of his career. Alongside his primary scientific paths, Dr. Martin is also an established actor, having won numerous acting awards and the Best Actor of the Year Award from the Ann Arbor Press Theater Guide. An actor in local plays in Michigan, including “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” he has also lent his expertise to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his spare time. Dr. Martin attributes his success to his father, who instilled in Dr. Martin a sense of confidence regarding his own intelligence and perseverance. Looking toward the future, Dr. Martin intends to write an autobiography, tentatively titled “Philip Martin Polymath,” as well as continue writing papers in respected scientific journals. Highly educated, Dr. Philip D. Martin commenced his professional career at Northern Michigan University, where he obtained a BS in chemistry and biology in 1967.
