Relocating from Mexico to the United States shortly thereafter, he completed his initial medical training at the E.R. Thomason General Hospital in El Paso, Texas, followed by residencies at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital and a fellowship at the Duke University Medical Center. He completed his medical training in 1981 at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he was a fellow in hand surgery. Dr. Monsivais returned to Texas at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso in 1983, serving as chief of hand and reconstructive microsurgery service until 1988. Concurrently, he was an associate clinical professor in the Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Department of Texas Tech Health Sciences University from 1985 to 2011. For the subsequent two years, he served as a general surgeon at CHS Middle East, LLC. Amid these exceptional appointments, Dr. Monsivais has excelled as the medical director of the Hand and Microsurgery Center of El Paso since 1992. Holding medical licenses in Mexico, Kentucky, NewMexico and Texas, Dr. Monsivais is certified by the American Board of Pain Medicine, the American Board of Surgery and the Federation of State Medical Boards. A patentee in the field, he has also authored more than 60 papers and 500 presentations in national and international forums, and has further been involved in more than 25 missions overseas for volunteer medical and educational services. Prior, he served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve, serving to the rank of lieutenant colonel of the Medical Corps. In light of his outstanding feats, Dr. Monsivais has been highlighted in “Guide to America’s Top Surgeons” since 2004, was listed in El Paso’s Top Doctors in 2009, and was featured in “Profiles in Hand Surgery” in 2005. Interested in medicine since the age of 9, Dr. Jose J. Monsivais pursued a formal education at the University of Chihuahua, where he received a BS in biology in 1962. Going on to complete a pre-graduate rotating internship at Hospital Miguel Aleman at Autonomous University of Guadalajara in 1969, he ultimately received an MD from the JOSE J.
