162 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Dr. John R. Porteous always held an innate interest in medicine, and as his academic studies progressed, he found himself more engrossed in surgery than internal medicine. Subsequent to completing three years of coursework at Fresno State College, he received an MD from the School of Medicine at Washington University in 1966. Thereafter, he was an intern in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital at Rochester University, and completed five years in surgery training through the Stanford University Hospital, finishing his medical training in 1972. Dr. Porteous became board certified in general surgery in 1972, thoracic surgery in 1974 and vascular surgery in 1983. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Porteous joined the faculty at Doctors Medical Center of Modesto in 1972 after completing his residency at Stanford University. Doctors Medical Center of Modesto is notably a 450-bed medical center, where Dr. Porteous maintained involvement in the trauma service section. Completing between 500 and 600 operations per year, he ultimately retired from practicing surgery in 2017. Throughout the course of his career, he was elected a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and he also maintained membership with the Bay Area Vascular Society. During his tenure at Doctors Medical Center of Modesto, Dr. Porteous was appointed to the medical center’s board of directors, where he served for 40 years. On five occasions, he excelled as chairman of the board. Additionally, he was appointed as a member of the physician advisory board for a national health company titled Tenet Healthcare, where he also flourished as chairman of their advisory board for four years. Upon his retirement, Dr. Porteous was honored with the eponymously named John Porteous Leadership Award by the Doctors Medical Center of Modesto, having been the first recipient of the prestigious accolade.
