195 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine LAW AND LAW ENFORCEMENT A third generation police officer with a familial heritage of law enforcement within the State of New York, John Wighaus has excelled as the president of the Nassau County Detectives Association since 2017. Previously serving the Association as first vice president between 2016 and 2017, Mr. Wighaus commenced his career in law enforcement in 1989, in which he served as a police officer for the New York City Transit Police Department for three years. Subsequently, he relocated to Nassau County, New York, where he first served as a detective fifth squad with the Nassau County Police Department from 1997 to 1998. Remaining with the County police department through the present day, he ascended the ranks to the Narcotics and Vice Bureau Team from 1998 to 2013, Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response Team from 2012 to 2013, and Asset Forfeiture and Intelligence Unit since 2013. Mr. Wighaus attributes his success to the work ethic that was instilled in him by his parents from a formative age. He also credits his colleagues and peers, as well as his innate desire to make his community a better place for everyone. He has worked tirelessly with the Executive Board to benefit all members. Alongside his primary ventures, Mr. Wighaus has served as the recording secretary for the New York State Association of Police Benevolent Association and president of the Nassau County Charitable Foundation. He has also donated to the Coats for Kids Drive, Veterans Day Food Drive and Highway Harvest. In light of his outstanding undertakings in law enforcement, Mr. Wighaus received the U.S. Secretary of Labor Peter J. Brennan Award from the Nassau County Republican Committee in 2019. Additionally, he earned an accolade from the United States Attorney’s Office in 2016. He hasmaintained affiliation with the Police Conference of New York in his spare time. Looking toward the future, Mr. Wighaus intends to continue dedicating his time to the Nassau County Detectives Association and Police Department, as well as help emerging police officers obtain their detective designations.
