58 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Drawing upon 45 years of experience in academia, Clement N. Klaphake retired in 2010 as a professor of sociology, anthropology and environmental science at Bellevue University in Nebraska. Maintaining his professorship beginning in 1971, he previously served as a high school and public school teacher between 1965 and 1968, where he taught in Canby, Minnesota, and Payton, Canada. During his tenure in education, he also served as a graduate assistant at the University of Colorado in Greeley between 1970 and 1971. Additionally, he is certified as a Nebraska master naturalist. Prior to embarking on his career, Mr. Klaphake pursued a formal education at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1965. He went on to attend the University of Northern Colorado, receiving a Master of Arts in 1971. Likewise, he completed coursework at the University of Nebraska between 1977 and 1983. While tending to his academic studies, he served in the United States Army between 1968 and 1970, where he achieved the rank of E-6. From a formative age, Mr. Klaphake was interested in the wilderness, particularly the study of birds. After completing his military tenure, he would often go camping with his family, where he continued to identify different bird species. He is a member of the National Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy, the National Parks Conservation Association, the North American Butterfly Association, the International Crane Foundation, the International Wolf Center and the Hawk Migration Association of North America, among other organizations. Civically involved, Mr. Klaphake performed breeding bird surveys for the U.S. Department of the Interior for over 20 years, and has also been a volunteer for the Hitchcock Nature Center in Iowa since 2002. A member of the Conservation Roundtable of Alaska, he was also a member of the board of directors of the Fontenelle Forest Association, who bestowed upon him the Outstanding Volunteer Award for 39 years of service in September 2019.
