132 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY After graduating from Spaulding High School in Rochester, New Hampshire, in 1979, James H. Jacobs initially worked in a grocery store. After a period of time, he secured an interview at a machine shop thanks to the recommendation of a friend, where he worked for several more years as a custodian. Subsequently moving on to working in the hazmat industry, Mr. Jacobs became employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire, where he remained for more than 34 years until his retirement. While with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Mr. Jacobs was involved in efforts to save the shipyard from being closed down. Notably, he and his crewmates walked as far as Boston, Massachusetts, wearing tee shirts with the phrase, “Save the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard” in an effort to highlight the importance of the facility and retain his and his colleagues’ jobs. Emphasizing that he was directly involved in these efforts on two separate occasions, Mr. Jacobs became renowned in the area for his participation in standing up for the integrity of the shipyard. He recalls these moments as the ultimate highlights of his career. Mr. Jacobs attributes his success to his faith in God, as well as the support and encouragement of his friends, family and colleagues. He says that he has always performed his job to the best of his ability, and he prides himself on his innate ability to never forfeit in the face of struggle. Civically involved as well, Mr. Jacobs has often participated in the James Foley Freedom Run, where he runs to support his favorite charitable causes. A member of Grange No. 86 and Odd Fellows, both located in Rochester, New Hampshire, Mr. Jacobs draws upon a background of family members who succeeded in the military. Supporting these experiences, he has always held himself to a high standard to meet his own expectations, and describes that his perseverance is due to his desire to achieve success, not perfection. Looking forward, he intends to continue enjoying his welldeserved retirement. JAMES H. JACOBS LABORER Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Rochester, NH
