71 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION 1985, respectively, he began his career as an instructor of woodwinds at San Jacinto College North in Texas in 1985. Remaining there for one year, he went on to serve as a teaching fellow for clarinet and saxophone at the University of North Texas from 1986 to 1988 before serving two Texan universities in various capacities. Between 1987 and 2001, he served Sam Houston State University and Texas Tech University as a clarinet educator and professor, as well as Sam Houston’s chair of their School of Music. From 2001 to 2010, he was a professor and director of the School of Music at the University of Utah. Since 2010, Dr. Walzel has excelled as a professor and dean of the School of Music at the University of Kansas. Formerly obtaining a DMA in clarinet performance at the University of North Texas in 1997, he has applied his expertise in music instruction as a commissioner for the Commission on Accreditation for the National Association of Schools of Music, a role he held from 2014 to 2019. Additionally, he sat on the board of directors of the International Clarinet Association for 30 years and has been a member of the American Federation of Musicians and the National Association of Music Executives of State-Named Universities. Dr. Walzel is especially proud of remodeling and creating one of the finest small recital halls in the United States. He is also proud of his career as a performing clarinetist, as well as the artistic ambassador of the United States Information Agency. Involved in numerous solo and chamber music performances, he has also conducted performances and has spoken on his expertise at presentations. He has received several teaching awards from the School of Music at Texas Tech University and won a Group Award from the Reno Jazz Festival in 2004. Thoroughly enjoying the practice of music, including playing music with others, Dr. Robert L. Walzel Jr. felt that music education was a natural fit for his skill set.
