134 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY Drawing upon a Bachelor of Arts in foreign service from Georgetown University in 1964 and a JD from George Washington University in 1968, Thomas Kuchenberg realized early on that a lawdegreewould establish his credibility in myriad career choices. First serving the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, he learned the complexities of pollution and environmental degradation, as well as how scientists in the Washington, D.C., area discussed these concepts. As such, Mr. Kuchenberg developed an innate aptitude for writing clearly about these topics of study to a general readership, having then authored an environmental history text, “Reflections in a Tarnished Mirror: The Use and Abuse of the Great Lakes.” As he progressed in his career, Mr. Kuchenberg served the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as the head of science teams between 1999 and 2014, prior to becoming a consultant in private practice – a role in which he remains today. Throughout the course of his career, he has lent his expertise to more articles and nonfictional works regarding environmental conservation for Outdoor America and Canada Today, among other publications. In this sentiment, he is renowned in his field for making complex scientific and technical subjects understandable to a layperson audience, which has made him an invaluable resource for policymakers who wish to understand such concepts. Mr. Kuchenberg attributes his success to his flexibility and ability to work on several different projects at once, as well as his variety of work experience with the Alaska pipelines, crewing on boats in the Great Lakes, and writing in the health and science-related fields in the federal government. As a testament to his success, he has earned numerous accolades from the federal government for his resounding service. Outside of his primary vocation, Mr. Kuchenberg lends his time and expertise to the board of Eastern Market DC and is a volunteer as a program coordinator for the Smithsonian Institution. Looking toward the future, he would like to see a re-establishment of the belief in science as a significant factor in guiding decisions regarding public health and environmental conservation.
