136 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY While in high school, Peter J. Mermagen became interested in joining the United States Navy, largely inspired by his father, who was a health physicist at the University of Rochester. Noting that his father aided an individual in building nuclear submarines, Mr. Mermagen attended the University of Rochester and received a BSBA in industrial management while simultaneously joining the ROTC. The ROTC introduced him to the U.S. Navy, and since that time, he accrued over 20 years of experience in the military, retiring at the rank of captain. During his tenure in the Navy, Mr. Mermagen completed analysis and management in financial, acquisition and information technology projects while serving on active duty and as a contractor. He leveraged innovative and integrated solutions to track and analyze decision support systems’ effectiveness, as well as investments and resources through the U.S. Department of Defense. A former commanding officer and associate comptroller for the Naval Sea Systems Command, he also completed three tours at The Pentagon, through which he acquired background knowledge on computer technology. Notably, Mr. Mermagen is a certified comptroller and weapon systems acquisition specialist. Mr. Mermagen also completed the Executive Program at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business and received MS equivalent diplomas in political science at the National War College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Likewise, prior to his retirement in 2010, he was an assistant secretary for health affairs for the TRICARE Management Information Systems staff, program offices and Wounded Warrior Project. Earlier, he served in administrative roles for the Washington Headquarters Service, Defense Finance and Accounting Service, InfoReliance, Raytheon Technical Services Company, Computer Sciences Corporation and Troy Systems. Mr. Mermagen received a Bronze Star Award for Valor from the U.S. Navy. He is proud of managing the deployment of computers to affect funding changes at The Pentagon in an effort to stop a North Vietnam troller from unloading weapons in the river delta of the Mekong River.
