An alumnus of Harvard University, he graduated cum laude with a BA in 1954 andmagna cum laude with a JD in 1957. Admitted to practice law in Washington, D.C., and Massachusetts, Mr. Vance first served as a law clerk to the U.S. District Judge of Massachusetts for one year before becoming an attorney with Covington & Burling. Shortly thereafter, he served as an attorney advisor for the Development Loan Fund in Washington and legal counsel for the USAID. Mr. Vance joined Foley, Hoag & Eliot LLP in Boston in 1963, where he was an associate before becoming partner in 1967. He retired in 2000. Mr. Vance notes that he enjoyed writing briefs during his tenure in law, and his proficiency in the written word was translated to his authorship of several articles in professional journals and short plays. To date, he has taught literature courses throughout Massachusetts and Virginia beginning in 2010. To attest to his writing prowess, he earned two Literature Awards from the Shaw Society of the United Kingdom in 2012 and 2014. VERNE WIDNEY VANCE JR.
