He graduated from Princeton summa cum laude with a BA in 1963 and attended Yale University, where he received a PhD in 1968. At the inception of his career in 1967, Dr. Stanley served as an assistant professor at the University of Rochester until joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins University, where he was an assistant professor of paleobiology, associate professor, professor, chair of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, and chair of the MS Program in environmental sciences and policy – a program he founded in 1993. Notably, he was the university’s youngest full professor at the age of 32. In 2005, Dr. Stanley joined the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, excelling as a research professor until 2019. Since 2019, he has been a research professor at Florida State University and a research associate at the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Stanley has been recognized for his empirical and theoretical contributions supporting the punctional model of evolution, demonstrating that marine life has served as the foundation of reefs and producers of sediment that become limestone. In 1979, he authored “Macroevolution: Pattern and Process,” which remains a pivotal text in his industry. As a testament to his success, Dr. Stanley has received myriad accolades, including named a Top Research Professor by the IAOTP in 2019, the Penrose Medal from the Geological Society of America in 2013, and the Twenhofel Medal from the Society for Sedimentary Geology in 2008. He has also earned awards from the National Academy of Sciences, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, the Washington Geological Society and the Journal of Paleontology. Since 1994, he has been a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Steven M. Stanley is a paleontologist and educator whose interest in geology developed during his early years. While in high school, he studied the geological history of the Chagrin River Valley in Northeast Ohio, including the hydrology of rivers and streams.
