32 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT Possessing a profound interest in the art of drumming from a formative age, Doc Powell initially discovered his love for the craft while attending Antioch University for his undergraduate studies in early childhood education. He received a Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and, during this time, served as a youth counselor for Youth Pride, Inc. Deciding to dedicate his life full-time to drumming, particularly African drumming, he began his musical career as a drummer and percussionist for the Wo-se Theater for African Heritage Dancers and Drummers in 1975, and remained there for five years. Since 1980, he has excelled as the artistic director for Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers in Washington, D.C. With Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers, Mr. Powell is a lead drummer for the cultural activity that occurs every Sunday between May 1st and October 13th in the Meridian Hill Park and Malcolm X Park in Washington. Notably, Mr. Powell thrice performed at the Kennedy Center with Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers, and impressively knows approximately 30 different rhythms and 25 different chants. He is incredibly grateful for being afforded the opportunity to work with a talented, well-versed group of performers over the years. Alongside his primary efforts in music, Mr. Powell also served as a business analyst and head trainer for the National Education Association for 31 years between 1980 and 2011 – a tenure that he considers to be a highlight of his career. Likewise, he has been a singer with the United Methodist Church Band and Choir. Mr. Powell received the Lifetime Achievement Award from theWashington Black Community in 2017 as a testament to his exemplary talent and efforts during his career. He attributes his success to his wonderful mentors who taught him the art of drumming. Looking forward, he intends to expand the cultural impact of Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers and continue performing to the best of his ability.
