50 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Drawing upon a Bachelor of Arts in education, summa cum laude, from Felician University in 1980 and a Master of Arts in education from New York University in 1982, Joan Ava Gillman commenced her career as a fifth grade teacher at the St. Angela Merici School upon receiving her master’s degree. Over the course of her extensive career in teaching on a public and private school basis, she served the Joytown Kent Elementary School as a fourth and fifth grade teacher, the Bede School as a language arts and social studies teacher, and the Professional Children’s School in New York City as a fourth, fifth and sixth grade teacher in all academic subjects. Remaining in that role for a resounding 20 years, she then served as a fourth and fifth grade science teacher for the Anna C. Scott Elementary School and a fifth and sixth grade mathematics and science teacher at Yeshivat Noam. Previously excelling as a fifth and sixth grade science teacher at the Calhoun School for a decade, she has flourished as a scientific specialist at The Browning School since 2018, in which she works directly with elementary and middle school students. Ms. Gillman is certified in K-8 education, and holds endorsements in K-12 education for students with hearing impairments. She has been a National Geographic certified educator since 2019. Previously lending her expertise to the Half-Earth Project with the American Museum of Natural History as an ambassador in 2018, she was also an ambassador for the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission Program, as well as a presenter at several conferences. Likewise, Ms. Gillman has authored myriad articles, conducted multiple workshops and contributed to esteemed journals. As a testament to her success, Ms. Gillman received the Young Teachers Incentive Award, has been named to Who’s Who in American Universities, and was honored as the Urhy Thomson Teacher of the Year by the Calhoun School. Outside of her professional path, she is a revered pianist and violinist who has performed in the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the August Symphony Orchestra and the North Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
