From there, she served as the director of nursing from 1985 to 2003 and dean of health careers, math and science from 2000 to 2019. Since 2018, she has excelled as the associate vice president for instruction and student success. Prior to embarking on her career, Dr. Mitchell enrolled in Graceland University, receiving a BSN in 1974. Subsequently, she earned an MSN from the University of Texas in 1976. A registered nurse in the states of Texas and Missouri, she became certified as a childbirth educator in 1978 and earned a certification in ambulatory women’s healthcare in 1983. Dr. Mitchell obtained an EdD in educational administration from New Mexico State University in 1996. Over the course of her career, Dr. Mitchell co-authored “Nursing Perspectives and Issues” in 1989 and 1993 and has contributed myriad articles to professional journals. Previously, she served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, for which she achieved an Army CommendationMedal and Meritorious Service Medal. Civically engaged as well, she was the coordinator of the West Texas Medical Reserve Corps from 2001 to 2014 and continues to serve as a member of their Steering Committee. Dr. Mitchell has also been active in the Military Order of the World Wars, a veteran’s organization, serving most recently as National VCINC from 2016 to 2021 and in other positions previously and since. As a testament to her success, Dr. Mitchell received the 2014 Excellence Award from NISOD, the 2013 Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Society of Allied Health Professionals, the 2005 Certificate of Appreciation for Community Responsibility, the 2003 Merit and Service Certification from Victory Warriors Drill & Dance Academy, and the 1997 Unite El Paso Legacy Award, among other accolades. With more than 40 years of experience in academia and nursing, Dr. Paula R. Mitchell joined El Paso Community College in Texas in 1979 as an instructor of nursing.
