64 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Dr. Robert Owen Paxton first became interested in history due to a secondary school teacher who bestowed upon him knowledge that Dr. Paxton found fascinating. Attending Washington & Lee University, he received a BA in 1954, followed by an additional BA and an MA from the University of Oxford in England in 1956 and 1961, respectively. Returning to the United States, he earned a PhD from Harvard University in 1963. During his doctoral studies, he served the University of California Berkeley as an instructor of history from 1961 to 1963, followed by four years as an assistant professor until 1967. From there, he was an associate professor at Stony Brook University from 1967 to 1969. Dr. Paxton joined the faculty of Columbia University in 1969 as a full professor of history, serving until attaining emeritus status in 1997. During his professorship, he also served as department chairman from 1980 to 1982 and director of the Institute on Western Europe from 1991 to 1995. Demonstrating versatility in his field, he has authored numerous works, including “Parades and Politics at Vichy” in 1966, the first and second editions of “Vichy France: Old Guard and New Order, 1940-1944” in 1972 and 2001, respectively, and the fifth edition of “Europe in the Twentieth Century” in 2010, having previously written the first edition in 1975. Likewise, he penned “Anatomy of Fascism” in 2004 and co-authored the second edition of “Vichy France and the Jews” in 2015, among other works. Dr. Paxton has received honorary doctorates from Washington & Lee University, Stony Brook University, the University of Caen and the University of Lyon. The French government awarded him the Legion of Honor at the rank of Officer, and the Ordre National des Arts et des Lettres at the rank of Commander. He was also elected a Rhodes Scholar, as well as a fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies, the Rockefeller Foundation, the German Marshall Fund, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The American Historical Association honored him with the Scholarly Distinction Award in 1998. He is a former president of the Linnaean Society of New York.
