208 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SCIENCES, PHARMACEUTICALS AND BIOTECHNOLOGY In his formative years, Dr. Ellis D. Miner had an innate aptitude for mathematics and physics, which culminated in his collegiate studies at Utah State University for his undergraduate studies. Attaining a BS in physics in 1961, he subsequently attended Brigham Young University and received a PhD in physics and astronomy in 1965. The same year, he began serving the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a senior scientist while simultaneously serving as a captain in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. From 1977 to 1990, he served as the assistant project scientist of the Voyager project. During this time, he helped plan the scientific observations of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. For the following eight years, he was the science manager for the NASA/ESA Cassini-Huygens Mission, for which he continued to serve as a science advisor until his retirement in 2004. While involved with the Cassini Mission to Saturn, Dr. Miner participated in the international effort to prepare for the launch of the Cassini-Huygens probe, which studied the planet Saturn and its numerous rings and moons, especially the moon Titan. Dr. Miner earlier participated in the Mariner 10 Mission to Venus and Mercury, the Mariner 6, 7 and 9 Missions to Mars, and the Viking Mission to Mars. As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dr. Miner served a mission to Germany from 1957 to 1960. After his return to the United States and completion of his undergraduate studies, he spent one year as a quality control analyst with Sperry Utah Company. Demonstrating versatility, Dr. Miner has written several scientific books and articles. He has been honored with the NASA Medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement in 1981 and 1986 and for Outstanding Leadership in 1990.
