22 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT Drawing upon an innate ability to write, Bernard Cornwell enjoyed reading the stories of C.S. Forester, which inspired him to write his own historical stories. A London native, he attended the University of London, where he studied history, prior to a brief stint as a teacher and, subsequently, being employed by BBC Television in Belfast, Ireland, for the following 10 years. First serving as a researcher, during the end of his tenure with the BBC, he served as the head of current affairs television in Northern Ireland. While working for the BBC, Mr. Cornwell met his wife, Judy, who was a visiting American in Belfast. Quickly falling in love, he decided to immigrate to the United States, where he focused his efforts on writing historical novels. Deciding to focus his writing endeavors on the adventures of a British soldier in the Napoleonic wars, he has since authored the “Sharpe” series, first with “Sharpe’s Eagle” and “Sharpe’s Gold,” both in 1981. The following year, he wrote “Sharpe’s Company,” which was succeeded by “Sharpe’s Sword” in 1983, “Sharpe’s Enemy” in 1984 and “Sharpe’s Honour” in 1985. Other books in the “Sharpe” series include “Sharpe’s Regiment,” “Sharpe’s Siege,” “Sharpe’s Rifles,” “Sharpe’s Revenge,” “Sharpe’s Waterloo” and “Sharpe’s Devil.” Thereafter, he wrote “Sharpe’s Battle,” “Sharpe’s Tiger,” “Sharpe’s Triumph,” “Sharpe’s Fortress,” “Sharpe’s Trafalgar,” “Sharpe’s Prey” and “Sharpe’s Skirmish.” Furthermore, he penned “Sharpe’s Christmas,” “Sharpe’s Havoc,” “Sharpe’s Escape,” “Sharpe’s Fury” and “Sharpe’s Story.” Punctuating the “Sharpe” series, Mr. Cornwell has also authored other thrillers, short stories, “The Last Kingdom” series and “The Starbuck Chronicles.” Most recently in 2020, he debuted “War Lord,” the 13th book of “The Last Kingdom” series. Since publishing over 60 books to his credit, he has become renowned across the globe for his unique story-telling abilities, and he attributes his success to good luck. Mr. Cornwell has been interviewed on myriad occasions in light of his books’ success, and he was named an officer of the Order of the British Empire.
