191 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Drawn to treating patients from a young age, Cynthia J. Shechter yearned to become involved in the medical field as both a clinician and an advocate. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in clinical sociology from Ithaca College in 1995, at which point she began serving Oxford Health Plans as a marketing manager. Remaining in that position for five years, she concurrently studied at New York University and earned a Master of Arts in occupational therapy in 2002. After receiving her master’s degree, Ms. Shechter worked at the RUSK Institute at NYUMC and at a small midtown private practice in a myriad of positions between 2002 and 2013, including specialty occupational therapist and director of breast cancer and lymphedema rehabilitation. Since departing from that role, she has excelled as the owner, president and director of rehabilitation at ShechterCare. Ms. Shechter is certified as a comprehensive oncology rehabilitation expert, a certified lymphedema therapist of the upper extremity, and an integrative oncology rehabilitation specialist. She is also certified in constraint-induced movement therapy and has received certifications from the Academy of Lymphatic Studies and the Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy. She was certified through the International Lymphedema and Wound Training Institute (ILWTI) in 2020. In her practice, Ms. Shechter treats medicine from a patient-centric approach in which she focuses her efforts on treatment rather than the disorders themselves. She advises that is it of the utmost importance for her to listen to all her patients and hear their statements prior to receiving treatment to accurately manage treatment modalities. Ms. Shechter has been an expert speaker for “Ask the Expert” of the Lymphatic Education & Research Network, an internationally recognized organization founded to fight against lymphatic diseases. She is also proud of her involvement with the Academy of Oncology Nurse and Patient Navigators, through which she will launch the very first New Jersey-based support group. She was named the 2015 Advocate of the Year and received the 2015 Patient Advocate Award from the Lymphatic Education & Research Network. CYNTHIA J.
