33 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT as the executive director of the Conejo Players Theater in Thousand Oaks between 1968 and 2010, accruing more than 40 years in his position. During this time, he also served as an arts commissioner for two terms for the City of Thousand Oaks from 1986 to 1992. Between 1962 and 1967, Mr. Johnson served as a television stage manager and set designer for Station KHJ-TV Channel 9, who promoted him to producer, director and production manager until 1981. Beginning in 1981, he served the television station as an assistant program director and executive producer until his retirement from the industry in 1990. During his tenure, he was the executive producer of the television programs “Off-Hand,” “Teen Talk,” “Taking ‘High’ Out of High School” and “School Beat,” which all earned Emmy Awards during the 1980s. Additionally, Mr. Johnson directed several plays during his career, such as “Kiss Me Kate,” “Peter Pan,” Guys & Dolls,” “A Thousand Clowns,” “The Most Happy Fellow” and “Candide.” Notably, Mr. Johnson was the campaign director for Alliance for the Arts between 1990 and 1996, as well as the chair of the board of the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks. He has maintained affiliation with the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Arts Council of Conejo Valley and the University of California Los Angeles Theater Arts Alumni Association. Previously he actively served in the United States Naval Reserves from 1954 to 1957. To attest to his success, Mr. Johnson received an Arts Advocate Award from the Conejo Players Theater in 2015 and a Twilight Award from Gold Coast Performing Arts in 1995. He also earned the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. Richard Turner Johnson is renowned in Los Angeles and Thousand Oaks, California, for his advocacy in the arts, entertainment and theatre industries.
