29 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT and 1972, respectively, in 1974 she secured a Fulbright student exchange grant to study at the University of Warsaw in Poland. She studied Polish art history and, through visits to the National Museums, she discovered the richness of the Polish visual arts tradition. Several years later, she entered a graduate school program in art history at the University of Texas at Austin, receiving a PhD in art history in 1989. From Queen’s University at Kingston in Canada, she obtained a Master of Art Conservation in 2000. Drawing upon her extensive formative experiences, Dr. Cavanaugh has excelled as a Conservator of Paintings in Oregon since 2002. She established her private practice, Jan Cavanaugh Paintings Conservation Services, first in Eugene and later in Portland. Earlier in her career, she served as the Curator for the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery at Reed College, assistant professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa as well as the University of Missouri at Columbia, and adjunct professor at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Demonstrating versatility in her field, Dr. Cavanaugh was the editor for “The Modernist Aesthetic in Polish Art,” Canadian-American Slavic Studies 21, nos 1-2, 1987, and the author of an exhibition catalog, titled “Selections from the Reed College Art Collection,” in 1989. She received several doctoral and postdoctoral grants for research in Poland and, in 2000, her book “Out Looking In: Early Modern Polish Art, 18901918” was the very first comprehensive study of such a topic to be published in the English language. She has maintained membership with the College Art Association of America, Society of Historians of Eastern European, Eurasian and Russian Art and Architecture, the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, and the Western Association for Art Conservation. An art conservator and historian for several decades, Dr. Jan C. Cavanaugh’s love for art began at an early age. It led her to make art, study its historical evolution, write and lecture on it, and restore paintings.
