210 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine Possessing a deep love for swimming and the outdoors, Peter N. Hovland was recruited to California State University, Chico, after spending his younger years swimming with the local YMCA. While pursuing a BA in physical education, which he earned in 1977, he was recognized as an All-American Champion on 23 occasions and a National Champion on 13 occasions. Subsequently, he attended the University of Northern Iowa, where he earned an MA in physical education, teaching and coaching in 1979. During this time, Mr. Hovland served with four NCAA championship teams and cultivated a close friendship with his college swimming coach, who encouraged him to pursue his interests as a career. After graduating with his master’s degree, Mr. Hovland was hired by Oakland University, where he has served as the head coach of swimming and diving since 1979. Since taking over the athletic program, he has won five NCAA championships with the men’s swimming team. Notably, he was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2017, having previously been honored in the Summit Leagues Hall of Honor, Horizon League Hall of Fame and Oakland University Hall of Honor, among other accolades.
