He earned an MS in chemistry in 1974, followed by an MBA in 1984. He commenced his career in 1974 at the University of Pennsylvania, where he notably served as a research specialist until his academic retirement in 2002. Since that time, he has excelled as an independent finance consultant and financial advisor. He further spent time as a financial advisor for MetLife Insurance. A fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, Mr. Desai possesses more than 50 years of experience, in which his expertise spans across the world. A contributor of articles to professional journals and international science publications, he also maintains membership with the American Management Association, American Chemical Institute and polymer division of the American Chemical Society. To attest to his success, he has been profiled in a myriad of honors publications and is a former India Merit Scholar from 1964 to 1968. Gilpin established the Dr Richard W Gilpin LLC consulting company in 1981 that includes the GTS Legionella Water Testing Service and the “Control of Biohazards in the Laboratory” course. Earlier, he served as associate professor and director of the medical school microbiology and immunology course at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and, later, as the biosafety officer and assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Since 1995, he has served on the NSF International Standard 49 Joint Committee on Biosafety Cabinetry. Dr. Gilpin has earned amyriad of accolades, including the Department of Veterans Affairs Distinguished Service Award, the Chesapeake Area Biological Safety Association 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Society for Microbiology 50-Year Certificate of Appreciation, and certification as a biological safety professional by ABSA International.
