40 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT Drawing upon a BA and an MA in modern history from Oxford University, Sir Howard Stringer was born in Wales and traveled to the United States in 1965. Only six weeks after acquiring a position at WCBS-TV, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he spent the subsequent 10 months in Vietnam as a military policeman. Following his military tenure, Mr. Stringer returned to CBS in 1967, where he remained for three decades as a journalist, producer and senior executive. During his time with CBS, he served as president of CBS, Inc., where he oversaw all broadcast activities, and the network became the first network to go from third to first place in ratings in one season. Additionally, he is a past president of CBS News and past executive producer of CBS Evening News with Dan Rather and CBS Reports. As executive producer, the CBS Evening News became the dominant news broadcast in the early 1980s, with a share of 26% compared to 20% for ABC and NBC. After departing from CBS, Mr. Stringer joined Sony Corporation in 1997, where he held such roles as chairman of the board, chairman, president and chief executive officer until his retirement in 2013. During his time with Sony, he spearheaded the introduction of Blu-ray discs as the global digital standard for DVDs and coordinated the successful integration of Sony’s electronics and entertainment industries. In 2020, he retired from serving as chairman of the American Film Institute in Los Angeles after 20 years. Mr. Stringer obtained honorary doctorates from the University of Arts in London, the University of Glamorgan in Wales, Oxford University and the American Film Institute. He earned a First Amendment Leadership Award from the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation and was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame, both in 1996. Likewise, he earned the 1999 Steven J. Ross Humanitarian Award from the UJA-Federation of New York and 2007 Visionary Award from the Museum of Television and Radio, and was named among the 100 Most Influential People of the World by TIME Magazine in 2005.
