Dr. Federman was an assistant professor within the Department of Physics and Astronomy for five years, associate professor for five years and full professor for 20 years until attaining emeritus status in 2018. Dr. Federman is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society. He is also a senior member of Optica. Previously serving the American Astronomical Society as past chair and chair of the Laboratory Astrophysics Division, he was a past president and president of Commission 14 of the International Astronomical Union. He has further contributed a myriad of articles to professional journals, served as a technical editor of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy for the Journal of the Optical Society of America B, and was a scientific editor for the Astrophysical Journal. Drawing upon a BS from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now the NYU Tandon School of Engineering) in 1971 and an MS and PhD from New York University in 1976 and 1979, respectively, Dr. Steven R. Federman is a celebrated astrophysicist, researcher and educator who amassed over 45 years of experience prior to his retirement in 2018. While studying toward his doctorate, Dr. Federman developed a strong interest in astrophysics, particularly regarding spectroscopy and interstellar gas clouds. During his graduate studies, he served as a senior research technician at the Hospital for Special Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center. As his career progressed, Dr. Federman completed postdoctoral fellowships at New York University and the University of Texas at Austin, also serving UT Austin as a lecturer for one year. Shortly thereafter, he relocated to Pasadena, California, where he joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a National Research Council associate in 1983.
