She was notable for bridging the gender gap in corporate and educational environments while sharing her knowledge of chemistry and geology. Post-retirement, she has served as an instructor for Chevron’s Adopt-a-School Program since 1991, where she previously served as a program coordinator. Ms. Palmer co-authored the article, “The Distance Traveled to Use Public Libraries,” as well as a book, “The Peacock on the Roof: A Memoir about Life on the Road in California.” She earned a 1986 Certificate of Recognition from the YWCA of Greater Los Angeles, 1990 Certificate of Recognition from the YWCA of Orange County, and 1992 Outstanding School Volunteer Award from Kraft General Foods and Walt Disney World Company. She was named 1991 Volunteer of the Year by the La Habra Mason Lodge. Believing in the power and advancement of women in corporate environments, Ethel “Sue” Susan Palmer was inspired by her grandmother, who worked as a library curator during a time when women were not viewed as equal to their male counterparts. Additionally, her grandmother’s work inspired her to pursue a career in the library sciences herself. Therefore, she enrolled in Cornell University, where she earned a BS in secondary science education in 1965 and an MS in genetics in 1969. While studying at Cornell, Ms. Palmer did a presentation on non-chromosomal inheritance, which was met with disregard by her male peers. From this point forth, she was determined to persevere and succeed as a woman in male-dominated industries. Early on, Ms. Palmer served in various “real working world” jobs, including as a food server, animal kennel cleaner and vegetable harvester, all whilst finding balance with childcare as a young mother. Through this formative work, she was taught labor management and the significance of being a well-educated woman in a male-driven world.
