70 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Coined the “Father of Fish Health” by the American Fisheries Society, Dr. Ronald L. Thune is an acclaimed educator and researcher who currently serves as a professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine at Louisiana State University. As a professor, he teaches graduate courses in aquatic animal diseases and pathogenic bacteriology. In addition to his educational work, he has served as the director of graduate student research and frequently conducts research on aquatic animals, such as catfish, as they relate to infectious diseases. He recently departed from his post as head of Louisiana State University’s Department of Pathobiological Sciences. To prepare for his career, Dr. Thune pursued a formal education at Colorado State University, receiving an undergraduate degree. He subsequently earned a master’s degree from Western Illinois University and a PhD from Auburn University. Outside of his primary vocation, he has contributed to journal articles, including “Genome Sequence of Edwardsiella ictaluri,” which was highlighted in the Journal of Bacteriology. Likewise, his article “Interaction of Francisella asiatica with Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)” was published in the journal Infection and Immunity. To remain abreast of developments in his areas of interest, Dr. Thune is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and a past president of the Fish Health section of the American Fisheries Society. As a testament to his success in the field, he was presented with an Exemplary Service Award and two Best Paper Awards from Louisiana State University. Furthermore, he earned the Triad Nitrogen Inc. Award of Excellence for Outstanding Research, the Pfizer Award for Research Excellence, a Research Award of Merit and the Veterinary Medicine Distinguished Scholar Award. Looking toward the future, Dr. Thune intends to continue conducting research on aquatic health and publishing his findings in peer-reviewed journals. Although he has experienced many achievements, he is especially proud of the grants he received by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, which have helped fund his research efforts.
