153 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY First serving in the United States Army between 1952 and 1954, Moorhead C. Kennedy went on to attend and graduate from the National War College, Groton School and Princeton University, where he majored in Oriental studies. From there, he enrolled in the prestigious Harvard Law School, receiving a JD in 1959 with a focus on Islamic law. Joining the U.S. Foreign Service in 1960, Mr. Kennedy thrived in an international career that took him to such countries as Yemen, Greece, Lebanon and Chile. During his subsequent tenure with the U.S. Department of State, he founded and became the first director of the Office of Investment Affairs, which he directed between 1971 and 1974. Notably, this was the first time that the Department of State addressed institutionally the international role of major corporations. Mr. Kennedy became qualified by the Department of State in Arabic, French and Spanish. He is best known as one of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran hostages held for 14 months. Following his retirement from the U.S. Department of State, Mr. Kennedy has leveraged his lessons he had learned overseas throughout his career and applied them to the authorship of myriad books, op-eds and articles, mainly focusing on the cross-cultural problems abroad and within the United States. As such, he has been a frequent guest on television networks and has lectured extensively in his field. Mr. Kennedy is a director emeritus of the National Institute of Social Sciences and has served on the Maine Library Commission. Additionally, he is one of Maine’s representatives on the board of the New England Board of Higher Education and is a past chairman of the Northeast Harbor Library. At Acadia Senior College, of which he is past president, Mr. Kennedy taught course introductions to the study of Islam. In light of his achievements, Mr. Kennedy has received the Medal of Valor from the Department of State and the Gold Medal from the National Institute of Social Sciences. He also earned honorary doctorates from the University of Pittsburgh and Middlebury College. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening. MOORHEAD C.
