180 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Inspired by his father, who was the first Black neurosurgeon trained within the United States, Dr. Thomas Lewis Matthew desired to emulate his father’s compassion and work ethic. Seeking to delve into medicine, he earned an MD from the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1985 and served as resident and chief resident in thoracic cardiovascular surgery at the University of Virginia by 1994. Subsequently, he became certified in surgery through the American Board of Surgery in 1993 and in thoracic and cardiac surgery through the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in 1995. After spending two decades in various hospitals and cardiac centers, including Boulder Community Hospital and the Medical Center of the Rockies in Colorado, the Audubon Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, and Louisville Heart Surgery, Dr. Matthew notably served as the founder of Boulder Valley Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Since 2017, he has thrived as the director of the Johns Hopkins Cardiothoracic Surgery Program at Suburban Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he rebuilt the program after the departure of its past director. Through his efforts, Suburban Hospital has grown to become among the most significant providers of cardiothoracic surgery in the region. Alongside his primary appointments, he was a board member of the Jewish Hospital Cardiovascular Institute and the American Heart Association of Louisville, as well as vice president of the Falls City Medical Society. In 2015, Dr. Matthew authored “Ethical Precepts for Medical Volunteerism: Including Local Voices and Values to Guide RHD Surgery in Rwanda,” following an appointment as a volunteer and open heart surgeon at King Faisal Hospital in Rwanda from 2013 to 2015. Likewise, he volunteered on medical missions in Mexico and Honduras. Dr. Matthew has further been recognized as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Matthew has received several accolades. The recipient of the Multicultural Award from Boulder, Colorado, he has been named a Regional Top Doctor and among America’s Top Doctors by Castle Connolly.
