249 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SOCIAL SERVICES AND NONPROFIT Frederick Reed and his wife, Cora Reed, are the parents of nine children. Once homeless, they went from rags to riches and are recognized as the founders of Reed’s Refuge Center (RRC), established in 2008 and located in Wilmington, Delaware. RRC is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the development and well-being of children and families who have been affected by inner-city violence in Delaware. Acting as a safe haven for the youth, the organization endeavors to aid individuals through artistic expression, such as dance, multimedia production, music, culinary arts, fashion design, audio engineering and counseling, alongside other areas. Since its inception, RRC has provided after-school programming to nearly 1,000 youth annually. With the motto, “See Refuge in the Arts,” RRC has earned myriad accolades, including the 2017 Jefferson Award, the Community Excellence Award, the City of Wilmington Award and several others. In addition to his involvement with RRC, Mr. Reed has excelled as a cofounder, alongside his wife, of Ribbons and Bows Daycare since 2005 and the Read to Learn Academy since 2014. He is also a songwriter, producer and artist. An avid supporter of local businesses, he has partnered with the University of Delaware and Christiana Care Hospital, frequently donating meals to individuals in need. Mr. Reed attributes his success to his passion for helping the youth and their families throughout Delaware, particularly those from low- to moderate-income families who have been afflicted with violence, guns and drugs in their communities. His and his wife’s aim is to bring back traditional family values that will benefit all families who participate in RRC. Although his career has been suffused with highlights, he is especially proud of witnessing the children who have completed his programs, grow up and become successful citizens. Looking toward the future, Mr. Reed intends to franchise his nonprofit organization with his wife, as well as expand it to more locations in other U.S. states.
