68 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Drawing upon an innate love for the practice of psychology, Troilen Gainey Seward enrolled at the College of William and Mary for her undergraduate studies. Taking a particular interest in abnormal psychology, she was afforded the opportunity to complete an internship in the children’s ward at a local psychiatric facility. As time progressed, Ms. Seward decided to shift her sights to the educational sector and graduated with a BA in 1963. For the following four years, Ms. Seward taught elementary education in Petersburg, Virginia, followed by a nine-year tenure as a secondary education teacher at Surry Academy between 1967 and 1976. During this time, the EHA Act was signed into federal law, thereby increasing the demand for school counselors and psychologists. Matriculating in Virginia Commonwealth University, Ms. Seward completed an MEd in 1977 while simultaneously serving as Surry Academy’s guidance counselor between 1976 and 1977. Following this appointment, she served as the headmistress of Tidewater Academy from 1977 to 1979. At this time, Ms. Seward returned to the College of William and Mary, where she earned an EdS and a second MEd in 1980. After a brief position as a child psychologist at the Peninsula Child Development Clinic between 1980 and 1982, she joined Dinwiddie Public Schools, where she worked in numerous capacities until her retirement in 2001. During her tenure, she served as a school psychologist, director of pupil personnel services and special education, director of student services and district superintendent. Ms. Seward remains active in her community today as an educational lobbyist, where she has worked on pertinent legislation such as various laws that formally banned corporal punishment from Virginia schools. Additionally, she sits on the board of the Virginia Literacy Foundation and the board of trustees of the Virginia Retirement Systems. Likewise, she is a past president and chair of the certificate and licensure committee of the Virginia Association of School Psychologists and a former delegate to the National Association of School Psychologists, who bestowed upon her the 2016 Outstanding Advocate Award.
