He also served as chairperson of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for eight years. The recipient of a BS in civil engineering from the University of Moratuwa in his native Sri Lanka, Dr. Vipulanandan subsequently received an MS and PhD, both in civil engineering from Northwestern University. He earned the Fluor Daniel Faculty Excellence Award from the University of Houston in 2005, who also bestowed upon him a Senior Faculty Research Excellence Award in 2002. In 1990 and 2009, he was given the Hawley Award for Best Paper by the Texas Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers and, in 2000, he earned a Research Award and was selected among the Top 10 Projects by the Texas Department of Transportation, among other accolades. Supported by over 40 years of expertise, Dr. Cumaraswamy Vipulanandan developed such theoretical models as the “Vipulanandan Rheological Model,” the “Vipulanandan Failure Model and Vipulanandan p-q Stress-Strain Model,” the “Vipulanandan p-q Stress-Piezoresistive Strain Model” and the “Vipulanandan Curing Model.” Focusing his efforts on human-made construction and repair materials, he developed the smart cement designed to detect loads, contamination, cracks, temperature, earthquakes and gas leaks. He has developed numerous inventions, patents and methods to treat contaminated soils, oily wastewaters and salty wastewaters, as well as produce electricity through byproducts. The author of “Smart Cement: Development, Testing, Modeling and Real-Time Monitoring” in 2021, Dr. Vipulanandan has excelled as a professor of civil engineering and the director of the Center for Innovative Grouting Materials and Technology at the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston since the mid-1990s.
