152 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY Drawing upon nearly six decades of expertise in the government sector, Janet Marie Gorn retired in 2019 after serving the U.S. Department of State for 20 years. From 1999 until her retirement, she was a U.S. diplomat and security foreign affairs officer in the field of civil nuclear energy and nonproliferation in the Office of Nuclear Energy Safety and Security in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation. Prior to this endeavor, Ms. Gorn served the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C., between 1980 and 1999 as a program analyst in the Office of Radioactive Waste, a congressional affairs officer and a senior international relations officer. Earlier in her career, she was a research analyst for the Congressional Research Service, a research assistant to the senior fellow at The Brookings Institution and a policy analyst for the City of San Jose, California. Likewise, she was a librarian at the Drew University Library, the Wisconsin University Library and the Oshkosh Public Library, where she commenced her career in 1961. Notably, Ms. Gorn engaged in special assignments to the chairman and two commissioners of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as well as in the State Department’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental Affairs. Prior to her retirement in 2019, she also excelled as an assistant professor at Northern Virginia Community College for 11 years. She also served as a guest lecturer for the Foreign Service Institute. She draws upon a BA from Drew University and an MA from San Jose State University, and completed coursework at Harvard University and the George Washington University. Post-retirement, Ms. Gorn has been on the board of directors of the Prince William Historical Preservation Foundation since 2020 and has maintained membership with the League of Women Voters of the Prince William Fauquier Area since 2018. She has received myriad accolades for her outstanding work, including the 2015 and 2016 Meritorious Honor Award and 2003 Superior Honor Award from the Department of State, a 2015 Commendation from the Department of Energy, and a 2001 Commendation from the U.S. Ambassador to international organizations in Vienna, among other awards.
