158 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS At the inception of her academic studies, Dr. Dessy Boneva attended a mathematics school in Bulgaria, where she specialized in the sciences with great emphases in mathematics. Subsequently, she attended a technical university in Sofia, Bulgaria, and was chosen to further study engineering in Moscow, where she later served on a health mission trip. During this time, she discovered her interest in helping others, and soon translated her interests to the field of medicine. Dr. Boneva related her experience to that of her mother as physician and learning from her quite a lot growing up, which further propelled Dr. Boneva to pursue the field herself. Earning an MD thereafter, Dr. Boneva completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. She then completed her internship at the University of Maryland and residency at Dartmouth University, followed by fellowships at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland, Shock Trauma in 2011. Since completing her medical training, Dr. Boneva has held a plethora of appointments at various medical centers and academic institutions. Currently, she excels as an associate professor at the University of South Florida, a faculty member in trauma, acute care surgery and surgical critical care at Kendall Regional Medical Center, and a clinical professor at Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University. Specializing in trauma surgery, surgical critical care, emergency surgery, acute care surgery and general surgery, Dr. Boneva has completed myriad surgeries over the past 10-plus years, and she emphasizes that she is especially happy and proud when seeing her patients recover from their injuries and going back to their normal lives. She was elected a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was honored as a Top Trauma Surgeon in 2018, 2020 and 2021. Dr. Boneva maintains membership with the American Heart Association, the American College of Surgery, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Pan-American Trauma Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
