Bernhard Kliefoth felt that medicine was fascinating as advancements and innovations were prolific. He attended Princeton University, graduating in 1965 with a BA in chemistry. From there, he earned an MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1970 and completed his internship in straight medicine at Naval Hospital Oakland in 1971. Finishing his medical training in 1973 as a resident in general surgery, Dr. Kliefoth first served Washington University in St. Louis in myriad capacities, including as a neurosurgery teacher, chief resident, instructor in neurosurgery, and research fellow in the Department of Radiology within the Edward Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. Departing from the acclaimed university in 1978, Dr. Kliefoth subsequently joined Naval Hospital Oakland, where he was an assistant chief of neurosurgery for three years. Following this tenure, he opened his own private practice, where he has been excelling as a neurosurgery specialist since 1981. Adjacent to this appointment, Dr. Kliefoth has also thrived as a staff member at Physicians Regional Medical Center with Tennova Healthcare and the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Earlier, he was chairman of the Department of Surgery and the Institutional Review Board at St. Mary’s University. Alongside his medical appointments, Dr. Kliefoth is revered as an accomplished United States Navy veteran. Commissioned as an ensign in 1969, he advanced through the ranks to captain until 1981. During this time, he served as a radiation officer and medical officer aboard the USS Bainbridge. He ultimately retired from the military in 2002. For his achievements in neurosurgery, Dr. Kliefoth was the recipient of the 2003 Distinguished Southern Neurosurgeon Award from the Southern Neurosurgical Society. He is a noted fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association.
