39 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine An expert chess player as well as an accomplished author and publisher, Sam Sloan has excelled as the sole proprietor and president of Ishi Press since 1986, a publishing company that has distributed more than 100 books regarding Go, a popular Chinese board game. Alongside its book releases about Go, Ishi Press has further published books on chess and ancient Chinese chess, also known as Xiangqi, which has been in existence for more than 2,000 years. Ishi Press was founded in 1968 by Richard Bozulich, a classmate of Mr. Sloan, who appointed Mr. Sloan as president of the company in light of his prior experience in finance. Earlier in his career, Mr. Sloan served as a securities trader and specialist in over-the-counter securities, during which time he specialized in recovering business assets for companies that had declared bankruptcy. Subsequently, he served as an advisor for Don Dailey, with whom Mr. Sloan collaborated to create the chess program Rex. During his ventures in finance and publishing, Mr. Sloan authored the book “Chinese Chess for Beginners,” which was published by Ishi Press in 1989. Alongside his primary endeavors, Mr. Sloan has served as a competitive chess player since the 1950s, during which time he became the youngest player at the National Capital Open Chess Tournament in Washington, D.C., in 1959. In more recent times, he has competed in the World Championships of Xiangqi, earned a Silver Medal in the senior division of the World Memory Championship in China in 2011 and was named a Foreign Master by the World Xiangqi Federation. In light of his success, Mr. Sloan has served on the executive board of the United States Chess Federation in 2006 and has been highlighted in several high-profile publications including Sports Illustrated. Looking toward the future, he intends to delve deeper into politics, having previously served as a democratic candidate for New York’s 13th and 14th Congressional Districts.
