Dr. Wiescher has sat on the editorial board of journals and is a published author. He authored “Scientific Analysis of Cultural Heritage Objects” and, in 2020, wrote “Just Radio Activity: Study of a Natural Phenomenon.” Additionally, he has earned the Hans Beth Prize from the American Physical Society, Humboldt Research Award in Bonn, Germany, and Heraeus Visiting Professor Award from the University of Frankfurt. The University of Notre Dame bestowed upon him the Presidential Award, Edmond P. Joyce Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and Research Achievement Award. While studying history and astronomy as a student in his native Germany, Dr. Michael Wiescher developed an interest in physics. He graduated with a BS in metaphysics in 1972, followed by a diploma in solid state physics in 1975 and a PhD in nuclear physics, summa cum laude, in 1980 from the University of Muenster. After receiving his doctorate, he began his career in academia and has since served several universities. Currently, he excels as the Frank M. Freimann Professor of Physics and director of the Nuclear Science Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame. His research interests include the study of nuclear reactions relative to the understanding of energy production and the origin of celestial elements. Throughout his career, Dr. Wiescher also lent his time and expertise to Michigan State University as an adjunct professor, the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom as a concurrent professor, and the University of Frankfurt in Germany as a Heraeus Visiting Professor.
