Dr. Massalski encouraged Dr. Carbonara to delve into the field of materials science. After earning his BS in physics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1959, he enrolled in the University of Cincinnati, where he was a NASA trainee in 1964. From there, he joined the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus in 1968, serving as a research scientist until 1977. During this time, Dr. Carbonara obtained a PhD in materials science from the University of Cincinnati in 1970. Dr. Carbonara remained at Battelle Memorial Institute until 1988, where he was an associate manager for 11 years. From 1988 to 1998, he excelled as a group manager for S.E.A., Inc., in Columbus. Holding several patents in the field, Dr. Carbonara presents frequently within his areas of expertise and served as the editor for “Surface Analysis Techniques” in 1976. He has further sat on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Materials Engineering and the Journal of Materials Shaping Technology. A former chapter chairman of ASM International in 1981, Dr. Carbonara has also maintained affiliation with Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Lambda Upsilon. He attributes his immense success to his unconventional thinking processes and notes that unconventional thinking may be the key to solving difficult, complex problems.
