108 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION During his collegiate studies at Lawrence University (then College) in his hometown of Appleton, Wisconsin, Dr. Robert West was introduced to geology and paleontology by his professors, prompting his interest in the fields. Studying the disciplines throughout his academic career, he received a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1968. He served as a research paleontologist for several years, first while a biology professor at Adelphi University on Long Island and then as Curator of Geology at the Milwaukee Public Museum. In those positions, he conducted paleontological research in Arctic Canada, as well as the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal and Pakistan. He then directed the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburg from 1982 to 1987 and joined the Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, remaining there as executive director until 1992. Since 1992, Dr. West has excelled as the president and owner of Informal Learning Experiences, Inc., in Denver. Recognizing the importance of museums within society, he has been especially proud of learning and advising in the ever-evolving fields of sciences and education. As a researcher, administrator and consultant, he has witnessed the significance of museums from a variety of perspectives, which has subsequently led him to travel extensively in pursuit of newfound knowledge. Dr. West is a member of the American Alliance of Museums and a former board member of the National Center for Science Education. He has been published in paleontology and geology journals, as well as a number of educational and museum magazines. He attributes his success to his desire to satisfy the broad need of museums in society, which have been beneficial to students across the globe. For his success and exceptional undertakings, Dr. West was the recipient of an accolade from Lawrence University. Civically involved as well, Dr. West maintains membership with Rotary International. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue researching and honing his knowledge in his areas of interest. He lives and works by the motto, “Busy is better than bored.” A native of Appleton, he is the proud father of one son and two granddaughters.
