As a part-timer, he enrolled in art classes, having been drawn to art since childhood. After extensive drawing and exposure to painting and sculpture, he decided upon watercolor as a lifelong medium. In 2003, he moved to the Big Island of Hawaii and has enjoyed painting watercolors both in Plein Air and his home studio. During his classes, he began exhibiting his work and sold his first paintings in Sacramento. In 1999, he joined the Portrait Society of America, and his attendance garnered the position of Ambassador in Hawaii for six years. Dr. Appleman was awarded Best in Show in watercolor at the County of Hawaii Plein Air Painter’s Show in Waimea, Hawaii. He also exhibited full sheet watercolors of orchids at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 2012, where he was invited to be artist-in-residence, entitling him to a small gallery in the hotel, as well as weekly sessions of painting and teaching students. Pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Robert M. Appleman started college at age 15 at the University of Chicago. He transferred to the University of Michigan and received a BS in premedical studies in 1957 and anMD in 1959. He then completed a general internship at the Hennepin County Medical Center. For the following five years, he served the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, as a surgical resident and with a public health grant in the laboratories, where he received a master’s degree in surgery from the University of Minnesota. After working one year in laboratory science, he knew his medical career was most suited to caring for patients. Dr. Appleman opened his office as a general surgeon in 1965. In 1966, he was drafted into the armed forces. To close his surgical practice in the safest way for patients, he entered the U.S. Navy and flight surgeon school. After six months of flight school, he was assigned to the USS Kearsarge as senior medical officer. During his two years aboard, he was promoted to CDR and, upon discharge in 1969, he reopened his surgical practice in Sacramento until retirement in 1995.
