Shortly thereafter, she became a teacher and executive director of Literacy Volunteers of America in Huntington County, serving there for 13 years. After she departed from Literacy Volunteers of America, Ms. Cullen returned to the public school system. For more than 30 years, she excelled as a reading specialist and special education professional at Franklin Township School. She has been retired since 2021. Throughout her tenure in education, she has additionally sought out higher education herself and received a master’s degree in educational leadership from the College of New Jersey in 2002. One decade later, she received another master’s degree in reading from the Rutgers Graduate School of Education in 2012. Although she has achieved many successes, Ms. Cullen is especially proud of hearing fromher former students pertaining to their own success. Additionally, she is fond of her help in reinstituting the National Honors Scholarship Program, where she aided in advancing the literacy program from 25 tutors to more than 200 tutors. She maintained affiliationwith the National Education Association and the Quakertown Community Education Association and served as president of the Junior Women’s Club from 1980 to 1999. For her accomplishments, Ms. Cullen has been recognized extensively. She received the 2005 New Jersey Governors Teacher Recognition Award, 2005 Teacher of the Year Award, and 1996 Connie Hindle Affiliate of the Year Award. Likewise, she earned the 1996 New Jersey Women of Achievement Award from New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs, 1995 Alice Leper Affiliate of the Year Award, 1993 Literacy Award from the New Jersey Reading Association and 1992 Celebrate Literacy Award. Since the age of 3, Minga M. Cullen always desired to become an educator. Receiving a bachelor’s degree in education from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1972, she went on to teach in the public school system, focused on elementary level students, for more than eight years.
