A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 321 W ith more than five decades of industry experience, Dr. Jeanne Salyer is an esteemed health care professional and educator whose dedication to and passion for her field have been exemplified in her success throughout her career. Hailing from a family whose encouragement and support cultivated her ambitions, she desired to be a nurse from a young age and took scientific courses to prepare for the nursing industry. In 1967, she received a diploma in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System and subsequently earned a BSN from the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama in 1972. Shortly thereafter, she obtained an MSN from the university in 1975. After gaining experience in the industry, Dr. Salyer received a PhD in nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 1992 and completed postdoctoral coursework focused on interdisciplinary training in outcomes research through the University of Minnesota in 1998. Currently an associate professor in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing since 2001, she was first employed by her alma mater as a pulmonary clinical nurse specialist in 1979. Throughout the years, she has transitioned to multiple roles, including unit coordinator, nursing education coordinator, staff nurse, research nurse, case manager, affiliate in the Center for Biobehavioral Clinical Research in Critical Health Experiences, and interim chair of adult health and nursing systems at VCU. As a testament to her success, Dr. Salyer has earned several honors, including grants from VCU, the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation. She has also been presented with numerous awards from her alma mater in recognition of her excellence in nursing education. Dr. Salyer recognizes that the health care industry is changing and beckons prospective nurses to obtain sturdy scientific backgrounds to cope with complex problems. She believes that there will be a shift toward preventive strategies and end-of-life support, as health care providers are focusing on reducing the impact of illnesses caused by the environment.
