A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 395 B efore launching a career in nuclear engineering, Dr. John H. Warner Jr. graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a PhD in 1967. Yet it was only after becoming a staff scientist at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), a small new company, that he realized his true leadership potential. Over more than three decades, Dr. Warner assisted the company in its rapid expansion while advancing through various line management positions. Among his many responsibilities was managing a major segment with over 13,500 employees and consisting of seven diversified sectors with total revenues exceeding $1.6 billion. When he became chief administrative officer in 2003, Dr. Warner was tasked with executive management of a large fraction of the administrative organizations in the corporation. He served as executive vice president or corporate executive vice president and as a member of the SAIC board of directors for 18 years. When he retired in 2007, SAIC was a Fortune 500 corporation with $8.2 billion in revenues and over 44,000 employees. While at SAIC, Dr. Warner was also a board member of the California and San Diego Regional Chambers of Commerce, the California Business Round Table, and the La Jolla Music Society, and a trustee of Scripps Health. He also served on several dean’s advisory committees at SDSU, UCLA and UCSD. In 2006, he was named a Director of the Year by the Corporate Directors Forum. Widely regarded for his expertise in business management and growth, Dr. Warner currently serves as a board director at three companies: Cubic Corporation, ICW Group and Trex Enterprises. He has been listed in several editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World. Reflecting on a career that has spanned several decades, Dr. Warner advises younger professionals to take calculated risks, learn from their mistakes, and not be afraid of failure. He specifically urges those in leadership positions to practice ethical behavior and to hire, work with and reward very good people, while also developing an intimate understanding of customers and competition.
