396 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Edward J. Wegman is a highly acclaimed computational and data scientist who most recently served GeorgeMasonUniversity as theBernard J. Dunn professor of data science and applied statistics and director of the Center for Computational Data Sciences from 1986 to 2018. Prior to these appointments, he was employed by the Office of Naval Research in Arlington, Virginia, where he rose through the ranks to become a level-three senior executive between 1978 and 1986. After commencing his career as a professor of statistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for one decade beginning in 1968, he was also a visiting professor of mathematics at the University of Manchester for one year. Dr. Wegman holds a BS in mathematics from Saint Louis University and an MS and PhD in mathematical statistics from the University of Iowa. The co-author of five books, including “Brain Structure, Learning, and Memory” and “Topics in Non-Gaussian Signal Processing,” he has been a fellow with the Washington Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the American Statistical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Royal Statistical Society. He is also associatedwith the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, of which he is a senior member. Originally hired in the systems engineering department at George Mason University, Dr. Wegman was transferred to the operations research and applied statistics department. In 1989 he created the master’s degree in statistical science, and in 1990, he wrote the core curriculum for a doctorate in computational informatics. Thereafter, he became founding chair of the statistics department, where he also held the roles of director and chairman. He considers these experiences to be career highlights. Notably, Dr. Wegman has graduated 44 PhD students. A veteran of the United States Navy, he was recognized for his service with a Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service in 1982. He has been highlighted in multiple editions of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest. EDWARD J. WEGMAN, PHD BERNARD J.
