A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 127 A noted expert in philosophy, medical ethics and bioethics, Dr. Thompson M. Faller has taught over 15,000 students throughout his 50-year career at the University of Portland. Beginning as an instructor of philosophy in 1964, he ascended the ranks to become a full professor, ultimately attaining emeritus status in 2014. He has enjoyed interacting with them on a daily basis and remains in contact with several former students, even in retirement. In his formative years, Dr. Faller was influenced by his parents, who both emphasized education as a component of success. Making sure he was a diligent student throughout his career, his parents were instrumental in his development into the person and professional he is today. In his youth, he pursued formal education at St. Mary’s College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He subsequently attended Xavier University in 1964, obtaining a Master of Arts. He concluded his education at the University of Salzburg in Austria, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in 1969. During his retirement, Dr. Faller remains active in his community as a board member of the Portland Rose Festival Foundation and the Sisters of St. Mary Oregon Ministries. He also maintains affiliation with the Oregon state advisory committee for the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and as vice president of the Cascade Pacific Council for the Boy Scouts of America in Portland. As a testament to his success, Dr. Faller has accrued several accolades. The recipient of the Golden Palm in 2009 and the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America in 2003, he was also named Alumnus of the Year by St. Xavier Preparatory High School in 2003 and John F. Kennedy Man of the Year by the Knights of Columbus in 1993. Earlier in his career, he was a Danforth associate through the Danforth Foundation in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1976. Married to Madeleine O’Brien since 1969, Dr. Faller is the proud father of one son, Thompson Mason Jr. In his spare time, he enjoys playing racquetball, football and piano; listening to classical music; traveling; singing; and hiking.
