128 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION I nterested in world history since his formative years, Dr. Randall Arlin Fegley was inspired to become an educator by his history instructors in college, particularly professors James Percy, Christopher Hughes, Jack Spence and Peter Woodward. He earned a BA from Bloomsburg University in 1977 and subsequently traveled overseas to complete his graduate and doctoral education. He holds an MA from the University of Leicester and a PhD from the University of Reading. Since 1995, Dr. Fegley has been an associate professor at The Pennsylvania State University, having previously served the university as a coordinator for 12 years and a part-time associate professor for eight years. In his position, he teaches African, European and Middle Eastern history, specializing in the study of mass trauma, human rights violations and prolonged disasters in various overseas countries. During his tenure at Penn State, he has organized internship programs in Rwanda and India. Alongside his primary endeavors, he has been the executive director of the Sudan Studies Association since 2013, which he considers to be among the highlights of his career. He has also been a freelance writer and consultant since 1985. Dr. Fegley has been a prolific author throughout his career, having contributed myriad articles to professional journals and penned 10 books about post-trauma societies, political history and conflicts, and the rehabilitation of former slaves and child soldiers since 1989. Most recently, he published “A History of Rwandan Identity and Trauma: The Mythmakers’ Victims” in 2016 and “Beyond Khartoum: A History of Subnational Government in Sudan” in 2011. Looking toward the future, he intends to publish more works regarding mass trauma and how local communities throughout history have coped with various forms of trauma. As a testament to his professional success, Dr. Fegley was honoredwith the Beaver Community Service Award for his work with the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem to restore primary education in southern Sudan following its civil war. He was also selected for inclusion in the fourth edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America and the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the East.
