Ms. Freese is affiliated with a number of organizations related to her career, including Online Audiovisual Catalogers, the Nassau County Library Association and the American Library Association. She is also a member of the educational honor society Kappa Delta Pi and the international library and information studies honor society, Beta Phi Mu. Her hard work has been recognized with a number of honors, such as the Nassau County Business and Professional Women’s Association 1994 Woman of the Year Award, a Distinguished Service Award, the Twentieth Century Award for Achievement, and being named to the International Order of Merit on behalf of the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England. In her free time, Ms. Freese enjoys knitting, needlework and crocheting and is also very active in her local church, St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. M elanie L. Freese attended Hofstra University and received a bachelor’s degree in elementary educationwith a minor in history, as well as a master’s degree in elementary education. She also obtained a Master of Library Science from LIU Post. Ms. Freese is a certified librarian and is certified to teach from nursery to sixth grade. With over 45 years of experience in her profession, Ms. Freese is responsible for cataloging a variety of materials for the CurriculumMaterials Center and consulting on the management of CMC materials. She is an expert in children’s literature and educational material classification also currently mentoring a younger colleague who is learning to catalog materials for the university’s music library. Despite the argument that libraries and librarians are no longer important in the 21st century, Ms. Freese has presented numerous training workshops on various aspects of cataloging and classification to faculty and staff in both technical and public services. She also reviews materials for “Libraries Alive,” a publication of the National Church Library Association and authored a chapter titled “Smart Barcodes and Inventory Analysis,” which appeared in the ninth volume of Library & Archival Security and in the 66th volume of PNLA Quarterly.
