178 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Peter B. Hilton retired in 2018 after 26 years of employment with Saint Xavier University and more than 30 years of excellence in his profession. After commencing his career as a middle school teacher in Lincoln, Illinois in 1986, he became a teacher of education foundation courses, staff development courses and graduate courses at the university in 1992. In 2004, he began teaching as an associate professor, a role he sustained for 14 years. Dr. Hilton’s multiple areas of strength include action research, autobiography, mythopoeia and other qualitative models of research. Dr. Hilton served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. During his tour, he saved the lives of dozens of children on a burning bus, which prompted his desire to help children as a full- time career. In 1970 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in epistemology from San Jose State University, followed by a Master of Arts in individualized American studies from the University of Oregon in 1977. Soon thereafter, he received a Master of Arts in teaching and reading from National Louis University in 1986. Dr. Hilton concluded his education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy in curriculum design in 2004. The author of four books and a contributor to several others, Dr. Hilton has presented his research at numerous academic conferences and conventions throughout his career, conveying the idea that educators should look beyond the hegemony to adapt their curriculum and incorporate minority views. He has also remained involved in the American Educational Research Association and the International Literacy Association. Dr. Hilton was honored with the Saint Xavier Award and the Excellence in Teaching Award from Saint Xavier University in 2013 and 2018, respectively, which are among the highlights of his career.
