186 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION C ommissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1966, Dr. William F. Hughes spent the majority of his career in the military and retired as a colonel in 1990. Logging more than 1,046 combat flying hours throughout his career, he served in Vietnam as a platoon leader, company commander, platoon commander and captain from 1967 to 1971. He was inspired to enter the medical field during his service and earned an MD from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 1978. Soon thereafter, Dr. Hughes completed an internship and residency in obstetrics- gynecology at Tripler Army Medical Center between 1978 and 1982. He then served as a staff physician in the obstetrics-gynecology department of the Martin Army Community Hospital for four years. Returning to the military, he acted as a division surgeon for the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, a command surgeon for the U.S. Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base, and commander at the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, Texas. Since 1996, Dr. Hughes has served as a physician in a private medical practice, having also been an assistant professor in the department of obstetrics-gynecology at Texas A&M University since 1994. In addition to teaching residents for more than 17 years, he is responsible for more than 4,000 deliveries. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as a lifetime member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the West Point Association of Graduates. Dr. Hughes’ family could trace back service in every war in which the United States has fought, going back to the Revolutionary War. Due to his family’s outstanding service, they were selected in a Bank of America national contest to represent all military families. He is a recipient of the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Purple Heart, the Legion of Merit with three oak leaf clusters, a Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, an Air Medal, and more than 40 other accolades.
