A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 193 W illiam J. Jacoby, Jr. began his career as a specialist in internal medicine. A commissioned lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy since 1950, Dr. Jacoby advanced through the ranks to become rear admiral in 1972. While serving in the military, he interned and completed a residency in internal medicine at Jefferson Medical College Hospital. From 1964 to 1972 he was chairman of the department of medicine at U.S. Naval Hospitals in Great Lakes, Illinois and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before serving as director of education and research for the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. From 1980 until retiring in 1983, he served as the deputy chief medical director of the VA Central Office in Washington. In addition to his career in the military, Dr. Jacoby served as an associate clinical professor at Jefferson Medical College and as a professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and the Eastern Virginia Medical School. He was also a member of the advisory council of The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (part of the National Institute of Health) from 1972 to 1975. He served as the commanding officer of the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia from 1975 to 1978. Dr. Jacoby received the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal. Although retired, he remains a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Beta Pi, and a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Emory University in 1946 and a Doctor of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College in 1950, and he completed a fellowship in cardiology in 1956. WILLIAM JACOBY JR.
