222 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION I nfluenced by his mother, a piano recitalist, Dr. Clayton D. Lein was interested in music and enthralled by harmonic compositions at a young age. He was gifted with the opportunity to attend a special high school in Detroit, Michigan that offered extensive liberal arts and musical curricula. He subsequently earned a BA from Michigan State University in 1966, majoring in English, realizing that he could enjoy his two passions, music and literature, by teaching literature officially and pursuing music outside of the classroom. Upon winning both a Danforth Foundation and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he continued literary studies at Duke University, earning an MA and PhD in 1968 and 1970, respectively. Dr. Lein taught at Purdue University for more than 45 years prior to his retirement in 2017, serving as an assistant professor, associate professor, chair of the Lilly Endowment retention initiatives honors seminar and research experiences committee, director of the honors program in the College of Liberal Arts, and full professor. Independent of his work in academia, he is the founder and has been artistic director of the Lafayette Chamber Singers since 1972. A contributor of numerous articles to esteemed journals, he was also the editor of British Prose Writers of the Early Seventeenth Century. Dr. Lein maintains affiliation with several organizations, including the Modern Language Association and the American Choral Directors Association. He is also associated with The Phi Beta Kappa Society, Alpha Lambda Delta and the Golden Key International Honor Society. The recipient of almost 20 Outstanding Teacher and Excellence in Teaching awards, Dr. Lein was recognized as Indiana Teacher of the Year by the Indiana Humanities Council in 1993 and was inducted into Purdue’s Book of Great Teachers in 1999. More recently, he was presented with a Recognition Award for the 40th anniversary of the Lafayette Chamber Singers by the Indiana General Assembly in 2011. CLAYTON D.
